Benefits of Private Lessons

One-on-one teaching is the most efficient way to help students reach their full potential. Here are five direct benefits that private lessons offer.

Private lesson teachers model a professional sound
Students need to hear a characteristic sound on their instrument. If they only hear the student next to them in band every day, chances are they are not going to accel. It is just like an infant learning to speak; they have their adults in their life to model for them. The same goes for music students. The more they hear an acceptable sound, the more likely they will be able to imitate it.

Students can get concentrated feedback
In a typical band setting at school, an individual may receive specific feedback for 30 seconds of their own performance.  In private lessons, students will receive feedback on their own playing throughout the lesson. This builds their confidence and reinforces the positive aspects of playing. Further, it prevents students from forming bad habits that can inhibit their performance on their instrument.  Additionally. students will get to work on a certain problem and fix what needs to be fixed with expert direction from the teacher.

Students can study exercises written to their specific instrument
Band class does not allow for the development of more advanced technique on the student’s instrument in a way that private lessons can. These skills are crucial for development into more advanced playing.

Effective Practice
Young musicians need to learn how to practice efficiently. A student can spend hours each week practicing, and that time needs to be well spent.  A good private instructor will equip the student with proper practice skills on a weekly basis, so the student gets the most out of their practice time.

More motivation, less frustration
All students that I have asked agree that if they were having trouble or feeling frustrated on the materials that they were working on, private lessons will likely result in a solution. Students who have been studying a few years find it easier to stay focused and remain goal oriented, knowing they are accountable for their practice.
